I think holidays make our life more beautiful that's why everybody loves them. From all holidays the New Year is my favourite one. Children and even grown-ups wait for this day because they believe that all their wishes and desires come true and different wonderful miracles happen on that day.
People get ready for this holiday long before it. An important feature of the holiday is great cleaning. Everything has to be washed, dusted, cleaned, tidied and polished, it is done to create a special holiday atmosphere. People buy New Year trees and decorate them. They cook a lot of food.

Customs and traditions of Belarus and Great Britain, holidays

  1. Now let's talk about customs and traditions. What can you tell me about your favourite holiday?

I think holidays make our life more beautiful that's why everybody loves them. From all holidays the New Year is my favourite one. Children and even grown-ups wait for this day because they believe that all their wishes and desires come true and different wonderful miracles happen on that day.

People get ready for this holiday long before it. An important feature of the holiday is great cleaning. Everything has to be washed, dusted, cleaned, tidied and polished, it is done to create a special holiday atmosphere. People buy New Year trees and decorate them. They cook a lot of food.

On New Year's Eve people get together to see the old year out and the New Year in.

They eat tasty food, drink champagne, dance and have a good time together. They wish each other happiness and good luck in the New Year and put the presents under the New Year tree. Children like this holiday very much. They wait for New Year presents, which, they believe, Father Frost brings.

Many people consider the New Year to be a family holiday. But most of the young prefer to spend this day on their own having parties. As for me I prefer to see the New Year with my family, because in some years I'll have to leave my parents in order to begin my own life. That's why I want to spend as much time as possible with my family.

2) Do you find some British holidays and traditions special? Why (not) ?

Many people find British holidays and traditions special. I want to mention one tradition. Every Year the people of Norway give the city of London a present. It's a big Christmas tree and it stands in Trafalgar Square.

As for a special holiday I can name Boxing Day. On the 26th of December boys from the shops in each town asked for money. They went from house to house and took boxes made of wood with them. At each house people gave them money.

3) What questions can you ask a British teenager about his/ her birthday celebration ?

What was the most exciting present on your Birthday? How many guests have you invited? Where have you celebrated your birthday? How do you usually prepare for the birthday?

4) Which holiday celebration in Belarus will you recommend your British friend?

I think such holiday celebrations as Kalyady, Spring Greeting, Kupalle and Dazhynki will be very interesting for foreigners.

5) Do you think it is important to follow our grandparents' traditions? Why?

I think it's very important to follow traditions. They are part of the glue that holds families together. Traditions give children and even teens a sense of security. They know that in our changing world, some things stay the same. Traditions also unite families and make them closer.
