British governments (or Ministries) are generally formed by one party. The Prime Minister and Cabinet are usually all members of the same political party, almost always the one that has a majority of seats in the House of Commons.

Since the office was not created, there is no "first" Prime Minister. Some people think, that it was Robert Walpole in the eighteenth century, but he was known as the First Lord of the Treasury. The first person to be officially called "Prime Minister" was Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman in 1905.

The current Prime Minister is David Cameron. He led the Conservative Party through the 2010 general election where it received the highest share of the vote and more seats than any other party but did not win the majority of seats needed to form a government. On 11 May 2010, following the resignation of Gordon Brown as Prime Minister and on his recommendation, Queen Elizabeth II invited Cameron to form a government.[130] At age 43, Cameron became the youngest British Prime Minister since Lord Liverpool, who was appointed in 1812.
