The history of the Bank is naturally one of interest, but also of continuing relevance to the Bank today. Events and circumstances over the past three hundred or so years have shaped and influenced the role and responsibilities of the Bank. They have moulded the culture and traditions, as well as the expertise, of the Bank which are relevant to its reputation and effectiveness as a central bank in the early years of the 21st century. At the same time, much of the history of the Bank runs parallel to the economic and financial history, and often the political history, of the United Kingdom more generally.

The Bank of England Museum tells the story of the Bank of England from its foundation in 1694 to its role today as the United Kingdom's central bank.
Standing at the centre of the UK's financial system, the Bank is committed to promoting and maintaining financial stability as its contribution to a healthy economy. The Bank sets interest rates to control inflation, issues banknotes and works to maintain a stable financial system.
The historical displays include material drawn from the Bank's own collections of books, documents, silver, prints, paintings, banknotes, coins and photographs. There is a display of gold, including Roman and modern gold bars, alongside pikes and muskets once used to defend the Bank. Computer technology and audio visual displays explain the Bank's present day role.
Admission to the Museum is free of charge for everyone and includes a free museum guide, which is available in English, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Spanish and Welsh. Audio guides are available in English. Admission to the temporary exhibitions and events in the Museum is also free.
The Bank's collections
Having been in existence for more than 300 years the Bank of England has, unsurprisingly, accumulated a considerable number of items associated with its history. These items are grouped into 'Collections'. Some of them, such as banknotes and furniture, represent the survival of tools used in the everyday working of the Bank whilst others, such as the cartoons, have been acquired over the years either by purchase or presentation. Items from the Bank's collections are displayed in its Museum where they are used to illustrate the history of the institution and its role today at the centre of the UK economy.
Banknotes & Coins
The Bank's collection of notes is unique. It mainly consists of issued
Bank of England notes dating from the late
17th century, original artwork by note designers, and an unrivalled
collection of forgeries. It is the largest collection of Bank of England
notes and associated material in the world.
As to coin, the collection includes a representative selection of the
regal coinage issued by the Royal Mint from 1694, the year of the Bank's
foundation, and comprehensively covers the Bank's late 18th and early
19th century issues of Bank of England dollars and tokens.
Books & Documents
A wide-ranging collection of books and documents, both handwritten and printed, dating from the inception of the Bank in 1694 to the present. Subjects are many and varied and include personalities, premises and suggestions to make banknotes "inimitable".
The Bank also has a very extensive archive which covers every aspect of its administration, dating from its foundation in 1694 to the present.
Furniture
A small but rich collection of pieces of furniture, including clocks. These were used for practical and decorative purposes mainly in the Bank's Parlours - the area in which the Bank's senior officials have their offices and in which policy is decided. The earliest piece of furniture known to have been in use in the Bank is the Great Iron Chest, which is displayed in the museum.
The architect, Sir John Soane (1753-1837) designed furniture for the Bank including a set of chairs for the Governor's room. Much of what is
Pictures & Photographs
At some point between 1833 and 1855 this collection was started as a visual record of the Bank's history. The prints, drawings and paintings (both oil and watercolour) contained within it encompass the following subjects: the Bank's buildings, both interior and exterior views; views of London; portraits of Governors, Directors and staff, and cartoons and caricatures of people and events connected with the history of the Bank.
This collection contains the everyday items associated with the business of banking such as balance weights, calculators, keys and seals. The collection also houses material which cannot be readily categorised elsewhere such as weapons ranging from pikes and swords to revolvers and rifles.
