Born into a military family sailor. He graduated from high school number 23 in Kaliningrad, after which he worked as a concrete worker, a mechanic, and in 1962 he entered the Chernigov Higher Military Aviation School.
After graduating with honors from the military school left in him as an instructor.
Position astronaut received July 6, 1972, and before April 27, 1970 he was listening to the post-astronaut.

LIFE

 

    •  Born into a military family sailor. He graduated from high school number 23 in Kaliningrad, after which he worked as a concrete worker, a mechanic, and in 1962 he entered the Chernigov Higher Military Aviation School.
    • After graduating with honors from the military school left in him as an instructor.
    • Position astronaut received July 6, 1972, and before April 27, 1970 he was listening to the post-astronaut.

First space flight

 

    •  First space flight in 1977 aboard the spacecraft Soyuz-26 as commander of the ship to the orbital station Salyut-6, along with Georgi Grechko . During this mission he performed one spacewalk lasting 1 hour 28 min. All flight duration was 96 days 10 hours and 7 s.  After successful flight of 16 March 1978, for their courage and heroism, he was awarded the rank - colonel the honorary title of Hero of the Soviet Union and the "Gold Star" and the award of the Order of Lenin, the honorary title of Soviet cosmonaut and assigned to a class of "Pilot-Astronaut class 3." Also this year, he was awarded the title "Hero of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic."

The second space flight

 

    • The second space flight took place from 18 to 26 September 1980. This flight was the commander Yury spacecraft Soyuz-38 and Soviet-Cuban visiting orbital station Salyut-6, together with the Cuban research cosmonaut Arnaldo Tamayo Méndez. This flight lasted 7 days 20 hours 43 minutes 24 seconds. After successful completion of the flight 26 September 1980 he was twice Hero of the Soviet Union, was awarded the second award "Gold Star" and was awarded a second Order of Lenin, and on September 30 he was given a class of "Pilot-Astronaut Class 2." Also this year, he was awarded the title "Hero of the Republic of Cuba."

The third flight into space

 

    •  The third flight took place from February 5 to 29 December 1987. Yury Viktorovich in this flight was the commander of Expedition to the orbital station Mir. Space flight to the complex occurred on the spacecraft Soyuz TM-2, along with flight engineer Alexander Ivanovich Laveykin, they have worked with him in orbit until July and then changed Laveikin arrived with visiting crew on Soyuz TM-3 Alexander Pavlovich Alexandrov. Total flight duration was 326 days 11 hours 37 minutes 59 seconds. Upon completion of flight December 29, 1987 was awarded the Order of Lenin in the third, and on December 30 was assigned to the class of "Cosmonaut one class." Also this year, he was awarded the title "Hero of the Syrian Arab Republic."
