THE SYSTEM OF EDUCATION IN THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION

All steps of nursery education in Russia are free.

The first step is nursery school. Nursery school prepare children for the start of compulsory education.

The second step is school. School is divided by three levels – primary, secondary and common. There are 53 thousand schools in Russia.

Children start primary school at 7 and continue until they are 10. At primary school children have to study Reading, Writing, Arithmetic. Also children develop their creative abilities. They sing, dance, play, draw. Boys and girls, children from all social backgrounds and religious and ethnic groups may go to school together.

At 11 most pupils go to secondary school and continue their education there until they are 15. At 15 pupils must take a national exam called «State Final Attestation» and then they can leave school if they wish. Some 15-year olds continue their studies in the 2-nd form at common school or at a third form college. After the 2-nd common school form pupils may enter in a university. Other 15-year olds choose a college of further education to study hairdressing, cooking or mechanics. After the 2-nd common school form pupils must take a national exam called «State Unitary Exam».

Students will have got the Degree of Bachelor by 4 years of study in a university. Students may be bachelor of Arts, Science, Engineering, Medicine, etc. Students are given their degree at a special graduation ceremony.

Later students may continue their education to take Master's Degree. By the end of the 6 years students will have got the Degree of Master. The degrees are awarded at public degree ceremonies.

The university education is the most popular in Russia. There are 1070 universities in Russia.
