Robert Fergusson, a Scottish poet, wrote Scottish English and the Scots language which made him famous. In 24 years he tragically died and was buried in an anonymous grave because last time he lived in poverty. But Robert Burns had paid a gravestone and devoted an epitaph in honor of Robert Fergusson.
3. The famous English idiom is: to be like painting the Forth Bridge. That is mean if you improve or repair something it takes such a long time than by the time you have finished to do it, you have to start again. Forth Bridge is a cantilever railway bridge over the Firth of Forth in the east of Scotland to the east of the Forth Road Bridge and some kilometers to the west of Edinburgh. Forth Bridge is the origin of this idiom. It’s interesting that more than 120 years Scots continuously painted this bridge because when they finished bridge painting, the bridge became covered by a rust at the place they started painting, that’s why they have to do it over and over.
4.The first international match, involving England versus Scotland was near Edinburgh, in 1681. James Duke of York challenged to a game John Paterson who claimed that golf was an English game. John Paterson was a local golf champion and he won that match. John Paterson’s house was called Golfer’s Land. On the wall of the modern building is a plaque with a replica of the shield that once was on the façade of John’s Paterson’s house and a short explanation about this first international golf match.
5. The elephant house was opened in 1855. It is known as one of the best tea and coffee houses in Edinburgh which address is: 21 George IV Bridge. The elephant house was the place of inspiration for J.K.Rowling who sat writing her novels about Harry Potter in the back room looking on Edinburgh Castle.
