Sport
Cricket has been an important part of Australia's sporting culture since the 19th century.
Around 24 per cent Australians over the age of 15 regularly participate in organised sporting activities in Australia. Australia has strong international teams in cricket, field hockey, netball, rugby league, and rugby union, having been Olympic or world champions at least twice in each sport in the last 25 years for both men and women where applicable. Australia is also powerful in track cycling, rowing, and swimming, having consistently been in the top-five medal-winners at Olympic or World Championship level since 2000. Swimming is the strongest of these sports; Australia is the second-most prolific medal winner in the sport in Olympic history.
Some of Australia's most internationally well-known and successful sportspeople are swimmers Dawn Fraser, Murray Rose, Shane Gould, and Ian Thorpe; sprinters Shirley Strickland, Betty Cuthbert, and Cathy Freeman; tennis players Rod Laver, Roy Emerson,Ken Rosewall, Evonne Goolagong, and Margaret Court; cricketers Donald Bradman and Shane Warne; three-time Formula One world champion Jack Brabham; five-time motorcycle grand prix world champion Mick Doohan; golfers Greg Norman and Karrie Webb; cyclist Hubert Opperman, prodigious billiards player Walter Lindrum and basketball player Andrew Bogut. Nationally, other popular sports include Australian rules football, horse racing, squash, surfing, soccer, and motor racing. The annual Melbourne Cup horse race and the Sydney to Hobart yacht race attract intense interest.
Australia has participated in every summer Olympics of the modern era, and every Commonwealth Games. Australia hosted the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne and the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, and ranked among the top six medal-takers for the games of 2000, 2004 and 2008. In the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Australia was placed 10th in the medal table. Australia has also hosted the 1938, 1962, 1982, 2006 Commonwealth Games and will host the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Other major international events held in Australia include the Australian Open tennis grand slam tournament, international cricket matches, and the Australian Formula One Grand Prix. Sydney hosted the 2003 Rugby World Cup and the annual Australia–New Zealand Bledisloe Cup is keenly watched. The highest-rating television programs include sports telecasts such as the summer Olympics, FIFA World Cup, Rugby League State of Origin, and the grand finals of the National Rugby League and Australian Football League.[371]Skiing in Australia began in the 1860s and snow sports take place in the Australian Alps and parts of Tasmania.
Customs of Australia
When you arrive in Australia you may notice differences in etiquette, lifestyles and values. Australians are quite informal which can take some getting used to, especially if you come from a culture where ritual is important and where levels of status and authority are clearly carefully respected.
With most Australians living within 50 kilometers from the coast, many people enjoy a laid back and social lifestyle. A typical weekend may include a swim or surf in the ocean, participation or attendance at a sporting match, a barbecue with friends and spending time with family.
As your time in Australia continues, you’ll find yourself becoming more familiar and comfortable with aspects of Australian culture that may have initially confused you. Just like at home, there are aspects of the local culture that you will enjoy, and others that you won’t.
Australians are known for their underdog mentality, readily seen in
their sports. Rugby is one of the most popular, with their national
team, the Wallabies, a favorite of the country. They also enjoy cricket
and football. Traditionally, the final game of any competition is called
the Grand Final and resembles the hysteria of any championship game
around the world.
The Australian dream of homeownership has sparked
the rise in suburban development and the idea of the "fair go,"
or ability for everyone to have a chance to build a life. In addition,
there is a certain united identity to the country, recognized in the
statement of "mateship," the idea of equality and friendship
with their fellow citizens.
Today, Australia is one of the best places
frequented by tourists. Also in Australia was filmed movie trilogy The
Lord of the Rings, to be known to the world.
Although it is true that Australians beer, the beverage of choice for most of the population is wine. The country has developed a reputation around the world as being one of the burgeoning centers for culinary creations. Australia's unusual spices and foods make for creative recipes and cuisines. There is the obvious English tradition of meat pies and pudding; however, Asian cuisine has recently made inroads with the culinary professionals. The result is a changing atmosphere of food that is slowly being exported to the world.
