If the repeated word or phrase comes at the end of lines, sentences or paragraphs we have a type of repetition that is called epiphora. The research we have carried out has revealed that epiphora, though not as widely used as anaphora, still remains one of the frequently used stylistic devices in the English language that make the speech more powerful and impressive.

If the last word or phrase of one part of an utterance is repeated at the beginning of the next part, thus hooking the two parts together, this compositional pattern is called  anadiplosis. The analysis of the speeches we have carried out has revealed that anadiplosis is another widely used device which  also has  a strong impact on the listeners in both languages. This device also helps politicians make their speech more effective.

Synonymic repetition is a peculiar type of repetition consisting in the use of synonymous means to express the same idea. The words repeated are not necessarily synonyms, but become such in the context.

Enumeration is another expressive means which consists in naming over various qualities or recounting different objects or actions with the purpose of giving a many-sided artistic characterization to the phenomenon described. The words enumerated are homogeneous parts of a sentence. All the speeches we have analyzed in both languages, are characterized by the use of enumeration. Enumeration makes the speech more impressive and helps the politicians to stress the exact part of the speech.

Polysyndeton is the repetition of the conjunction or some other formal word before each following homogeneous part of the sentence. The repetition of conjunctions lends a definite rhythmical quality to the speeches. With the help of polysyndeton the politicians stress the simultaneousness of actions, or the close connection of the qualities or phenomena enumerated.

Inversion is used for emphasis or to achieve a certain poetic effect. In the inverted sentence the reserved word is logically stressed.  Stylistic inversion aims at attaching logical stress or additional emotional coloring to the surface meaning of the utterance. Therefore, a specific intonation pattern is the inevitable satellite of inversion.           In public speaking stylistic inversion is used for emphasis or to achieve a certain poetic effect. Stylistic inversion is one of the most widely used syntactical devises in political speeches.

Rhetoric question is a widely used expressive means too. It is an affirmative or negative statement in the form of the question. It is emotionally colored, it is distinct from an ordinary question which is asked to draw forth some information, the rhetoric question does not require any answer; it serves the purpose of calling the hearer’s attention to a particular point in the speech.

So what does that mean in practice?

What are the steps that banks need to take if they to reflect better the values of the British people - the values of their customers?

The analysis of syntactical stylistic devices helped us to come to conclusion that the speeches of English and American politicians are characterized by the use of a great number of stylistic devices which make them more persuasive and expressive. In our opinion repetition is the most typical stylistic device of publicistic style. The use of other stylistic devices depends on the occasion and individual character of the politician. Anadiplosis is also widely used in political speeches which helps to have a strong impact on listeners and makes the speech more effective. Enumeration makes the speeches more impressive and helps the politicians to stress the exact parts of the speech. With the help of polysyndeton the politicians stress the simultaneousness of actions, or the close connection of the qualities or phenomena enumerated. Our research showed that politicians use a great number of rhetorical questions which contribute to making political speeches more expressive and persuasive. Parallelism helps to emphasize the necessary word or phrase of the speech. The research and analysis revealed that good persuasive speaking demands expressive language that keeps the audience involved in the transaction with the speaker and helps the latter realize his goal.

 

3.3. God and biblical themes in the speeches of American Presidents

It is customary in American political discourse to employ biblical language, which is an

inherent part of American public speaking.

When speaking of  history of  American politics it is easy to digress into the field of religion. Christianity has a given place as the normative faith in many politicians’ speeches, although some politicians never forget to mention that U.S.A. is a nation of many different religions (leaving out some minorities, while including others).

Nearly all the speeches of American presidents show that their language can easily be associated with the Christian faith.  Other than that, the references to God, God's will and God's promises, cannot exclusively be tied to Christianity, rather these references are applicable to various faiths that recognize the existence of one God.
